While I would also consider myself an otaku and do use the word freely here in America,I now know better then to do it in Japan,if I ever do go (which is one of my dreams,not just for the anime but for the culture,as well). I guess now I will create a phrase: MarzTaku- An otaku who has an interest in anime but also has a social life. :)

As far as pop-culture goes, you're really not missing anything.
Anyways, I've heard a, well, I guess it's a stereotype, that western culture is a really big thing in Japan. Is there any truth to this statement?
