A visit to the Coliseum, Nero's old digs and the Pantheon was like looking through the big end of a telescope.

These images may help you imagine the ghosts of 2000 years ago during the height of the Roman Empire.

  • Beautifully shot. It brings it all back. I haven't been there in ages and I see that some of the archaeological digs that were being uncovered in the forum when I was there, are finally open to the public.

  • Thank you.

The excavated rooms now open (at 4:40 in the video) are from Nero's reign. Amazingly, the paint is original, not restored in any way.

  • Ah, is that part of Nero's Domus Aureus on the Palatine or one of the other hills outside of the Forum? The last time that I was there, the part of Nero's villa that constituted most of the Esquiline Hill hadn't been excavated at all. The only indication that there was anything there at all was a rock-lined hole in the ground with a sign that said underneath lies Nero's villa. To still have preserved frescoes just like Pompeii, only buried in mud instead of ash, is quite remarkable.

  • I see ME!!!!! YAY!!!!!
