Back in November 2007 we were lucky to be able to walk out over the Hudson River on the old Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge. An icon for almost a century many people know virtually nothing about it and how it cam to stand so dauntingly above the mighty river.

In this video Fred Schaeffer and Amy Husten take us out on the steel structure 212 feet above the Hudson.

This bridge will be refurbished as a national park and people will be able to walk and ride bikes connecting the Dutchess & Ulster Rail Trails.

The bridge is also planned to be apart of the 2009 quadricentennial of Henry Hudson's journey up the river that hold his name.

This clip was taken with a Sony HDR-SR1 AVC HD 30GB Handycam Camcorder. It has a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T lens and 4.0 mega pixels with 80x digital zoom.

  • sweet my moms the executive director of this now

  • I think the Mayor, NY State and all the donors & supporters never thought it might attract so many people from so many different and far away places. Traffic can be unbearable as well as parking ..but the people keep coming! I imagine the entire area is ripe for revitalization ..

  • is this working ?

  • I know I thought that area was not that bad... viewing it from the bridge makes it look like a slum. Poughkeepsie is in terrible shape.

The bridge might be the biggest waste of tax payer money in history. It does not, and will never bring in any revenue.

  • man the openin was mad good

  • hogwash! Mr. Schaeffer....if you're saying that the bridge was built to last forever....what does it need to be saved from?

  • I believe it will be be opening on October, 3rd 2009.

    I'll defiantly be there.

I always wanted to walk over it since I was a child.

  • The tracks are all gone now
