This is my audition for Parelli Natural Horsemanship, Level 1 Online. As you can see, it was a very windy day at 1,000 feet! For the audition, we had to combine various Parelli games and patterns into a unique sequence. There are some required moves, but the rest was up to me. For the non-Parelli viewer, the games replicate the games that horses play with each other to discover their ranking in the herd. Most of the games involve moving the horses feet, using either rhythmic or steady pressure. My horse is a 17-year-old Shire-cross gelding. He is 15.1 hh and is actually owned by the UK's horse rescue charity HAPPA (Horse and Pony Protection Association) - http://www.happa.org.uk/. He is on life-time loan to me and is a brilliant horse. It is believed that he has had a fairly tough working life, pulling carts in towns etc and this has taken its toll on his health. He has some arthritis and has to be exercised carefully. This includes gentle riding. In Parelli terms, his 'horseanality' is Left Brain Introvert (LBI). This means that he has 'more woah than go'. He can act disinterested or unmotivated. Unless you know how to approach him, he will become non-responsive until you give up whatever you are asking him to do. An LBI needs interesting new challenges and games to keep him motivated. In this video you can see how motivated he becomes when playing with the cones and the tyre. He has a great deal of 'opposition reflex' to steady pressure. He is happier yielding his hindquarters than he is yielding his forequarters. This boy loves going to and touching objects (with his nose or feet). You will notice that he attempts to invent his own game by touching the cone during the Figure 8s! Having a 'mission' is the best way to motivate him. The ambient acoustic guitar music is "Sun City Solo" by Orb Gettarr. It is CopyLeft and can be used for this video as I have credited the artist.
Here are the Parelli Games and Patterns in the sequence that they appear in the video:
Friendly Game with stick and string.
Leg massage.
Touch It Pattern - to tyre and he offers foot on it.
Porcupine Game - hind quarters yield to steady pressure from stick.
Porcupine Game - backup from steady pressure to chest with hand.
Driving Game - hindquarters yield from rhythmic pressure using rope.
Driving Game - forequarters yield from rhythmic pressure using 'magic fingers'.
Driving Game - backup from rhythmic pressure using stick.
Circling Game
Squeeze Game
Sideways Game
Figure 8 Pattern
Walk - Trot - Backup leading from front.
