there is one thing that i do not quite understand: grabbing the blade. does everyone pretend they have chain mail gloves or what? i am so confused.

ah heres something i can get animated about;
grabbing the blade of ones sword (or an opponents for that matter) was common practice in medieval european styles, because frankly, the swords werent crazy sharp, and if you didnt slide your hand around much, you wouldnt get cut.
when we do it, we represent that by being able to grab swords, but if the sword is yanked back, we let go. because it would have slipped out anyways, cutting our hand open.
it is generally safer with gloves, but not too bad

as i was trying to say, its not smart to do in reality without gloves, but if you are going to die, a little cut in your hand is better than dying, even with the threat of infection.

oh sorry about so many comments, but another thing: grabbing an opponents sword by anything other than his crossguard pommel or hilt is a worse idea than by the blade...
grabbing your own was and is much more common
