@flyingpeacocktents Both must be the same interface (IDE vs SATA), if you just want the drive to work.
If you want Windows to work, the laptops must be close to identical.

@FreeCompConsultant I sort of have the same issue; I have a an laptop, with a drive, and a new laptop without one. Can I simply put the old in the new, or are there other things I have to do to not screw it up?

@2468manfan Unfortunately you have to buy a hard drive and an operating system. You can often buy Windows at a reduced price (OEM version) if you buy with a piece of hardware such as a hard drive.

If I don't need the files on the old HD, i don't have to backup anything, right?

So if I wanted to replace an existing HDD I would have to have a separate copy of all the files first on a USB or something?

@Soundofstereos It's not required; I simply suggest a backup first JUST IN CASE something goes wrong. Online backup is fine if you make sure to backup all that is important to you (see OnlineBackupSpot(dot)com).
