While birding in the West Rutland Marsh, at dusk on the evening of 28 March 2009, I heard a most unusual call coming from low in the reeds. The call instantly reminded me of the old manual typewriter I used to type my reports in high school. My "Peterson's Field Guide to Bird Songs" matched this call to the Yellow Rail, which has only been recorded in Vermont on 4 previous occasions. You can hear the call during the first 17 seconds of this recording, although the hundreds of Eastern Starlings and Red-wing Blackbirds makes this special call very difficult to discern.

  • Sounds like it could be one...doesn't sound very insect like. I found a dead one at work last November. Yes, a deceased Yellow Rail at work....not many folks can say that!
