Ἑλληνικὸν κείμενον ἐδῶ Hellenic text here (translation of English below):
http://graeca.mrezha.net/upload/MontrealPsaltiki/TV_Aghia_Lydia_Thessaloniki/...

The ladies of Aghia Lydia are exemplary in their TRADITIONAL rendering of our orthodox psaltic tradition :

- traditional vocal positioning (almost nasal);

- traditional intervals ([a] tone much larger than « natural » [greater than 204 cents] and, thus, much larger than tempered [i.e. greater than 200 cents] ; and, quite often, [b] fifth larger than « natural » [greater than 702 cents] and, thus, much larger than tempered [i.e. greater than 700 cents]) ;

- traditional immobile stance/posture (notice how the leading chanter moves VERY delicately to clear her throat; a VERY rare event, because she did EVERYTHING to avoid having to move in the sequences that have been removed);

- dress = traditional clothes appropriate for church, including covered head by some ladies;

- traditional participation of the faithful, at an appropriate volume which does not compete with whatever is chanted by the chorus.

I did not appreciate the deacon, so I removed his ecphoneseis.

I also don't appreciate the way the 2nd chanter ALWAYS slows down the tempo (I nevertheless left some samples of her chanting which is otherwise exemplary).

Furthermore, don't appreciate the fluctuating ison.

For those wishing to learn traditional psaltiki, you should seek out this church, be it on TV or in person, and try imitating as much as possible the various positively underlined points.

  • To Theo!

    Some lines in the slower "Agios" (mode 01, 1:25) may also be found in Coptic chant as well, with a slight variation in melody as well as intervals (usually the re-mi is quite low in Copts and Arabs in general).

    For theose in the Coptic church, can you please make a video with some chants I have put up on the server.

    Please send me personnal e-mail.

    This is TRUE tradition, without any of the "sentimental" junk of today's "superstars".
