Richard Yeats wrote "Revolutionary Road" as an indictment of the culture of safety and conformity that was the prevalent culture of the 1950s. The generation of Americans that was born in and tested by fire in the Great Depression, showed exceptional bravery during WWII, were willing to settle for a life of banality, safety, and conformity in the 1950s. The road that our founding fathers started us on in 1776 became a cul de sac in the 1950s.
