Georgy Pavlovich Vinogradov (Георгий Павлович Виноградов) sings "Good Morning", the eighth song of Franz Schubert's "Die schöne Müllerin" (Beautiful Miller's Wife), written in 1823. The songs were originally a poem by Wilhelm Müller, and here they are translated into Russian by I.Tyumenev. The recording was probably made in Moscow in around 1951.

THIS IS SONG NO. 8 OF A TRAGIC LOVE STORY IN 20 SONGS, HERE:

TO FOLLOW THE STORY, READ POTTED WORDAGE BELOW. (A serenade; the first of several courting songs.)

Potted wordage #8:
Millermaid - why do you turn away shyly when I say hello? . . . I'll watch your window from a distance, then . . . Please come out? . . . Is night kinder to you than day? . . . forget your dreams; wake up and hear the lark sing; hear your lover calling you . . .

Why is this one so popular? A serenade is about showcasing a beautiful voice, so this one uses traditional storytelling techniques with its indulgent echoes and hung resolutions at the verse-ends. It plays to the strengths of sweet-voiced tenors like Vinogradov, and it makes the audience savour the little suspenses.

Location: Thwaite Mills, Leeds, West Yorkshire. The mill has two waterwheels. Songs 8 and 15 show different views of the same side of the smaller wheel, and song 6 shows its other side. Songs seven and eleven show two views of the larger waterwheel.

This video is dedicated to Kievest who, I believe, quite likes Vinogradov . . .

  • this is pure heaven-nothing more to say!

  • @georgiannanyman

    Agreed.

  • Vinogradov's celestial voice is a sublime instrument to express in an approach- able, conversational way the spirit of Schubert's iconic song cycle. In utterly divine fashion, Vinogradov modulates from optimism, despair and eventually, tragedy. In this song, with its wistful poetic beauty, Vinogradov radiant timbre gives voice to the tender emotions that permeate the atmos- phere! The pace of the millwheel with its complex pattern of gears beautifully supports the mood!
  • Thank you both, Kievest and Vstasov for your lovely commentaries.

  • I agree with you Kievest. I think Vinogradov's boyish, unguarded sincerity is completely disarming. His Schöne Müllerin is as beautiful as Aksel Schiøtz's, and just as sad.
