My Beloved Spake, Z. 28
Verse Anthem

Julian Podger, Charles Daniels - Tenors
Charles Pott, Peter Harvey - Basses

Gabrieli Consort
Paul McMreesh

*From the Archiv CD "Hail, Bright Cecilia!" (1995)

"My Beloved Spake" was composed no later than 1677 -- Purcell's 18th year. Astonishing in its technical assurance, delightful in the vernal freshness of its musical invention, and beautifully lucid in construction, with its opening symphony repeated mid-way through the succession of vocal movements, it is not less remarkable than the teenaged works of Mozart.
