Harry smiles way more often when it's the three of them or just him and Ron. Hermione, bless her, is more of the serious and motherly type and can't respond to his humor or make him laugh, enjoy life, etc. That's why, again, he needs a mixture of Ron and Hermione. Someone who's sensible yet is able to make him laugh. I mean, that's why he's friends with them in the first place!
