Modern Greek Lesson 2 - Combination Letters
Please learn the letters of the alphabet in lesson 1 before proceeding to this one.

Accent marks
ήτα - rising sound
ητα - no mark, level sound

Combination Letters
γγ - g as in "go"; at start of a word; ng as in "singer"; elsewhere
ντ - d as in "day"; at start of a word; nd as in "land"; elsewhere
μπ - b as in "boy"; at start of a word; mb as in "lamb"; elsewhere

άγγελος - angel
πέντε - five
μπαμπά - dad

αι - ay as in "say"
ου - ou as in "soup"

αυ - av as in "avenue"; af as in "after"
ευ - ev as in "even"; ef as in "chef"

ει, οι, υι - e as in "meet"

av / ev - before vowel or voiced consonant
af / ef - elsewhere

β, γ, δ, ζ, ρ are some voiced consonants

A voiced sound vibrates your vocal chords.
Example: Z is voiced sound but not S.

είμαι - I am
σου - your
αυτό - this
αύριο - tomorrow

  • @maxtran2005 o άγγελος δεν έχει θηλυκό....Δηλαδή για τους άνδρες λέμε :είσαι ένας άγγελος

    και για τις γυναίκες λέμε πάλι:είσαι ένας άγγελος... Δεν υπάρχει άγγελη......

  • @CheersTolnsanity some of them are, some of them aren't: α = a (as in "car"), β = v, γ = y(as in "yes"), δ = th as in "THis" , ε = e but only as in "hElp",

    ΜΥΡΝΗ ΝΑΖΙΧΑ - upper case

    μυρνη ναζιχα - lower case

    If your u sounds like ou as in soup, then you can write Μουρνη

  • Thanks! I'm still on 2 :P So you're saying a would be α? Like.. Is the Greek alphabet equal to the English alphabet? such as a = α, b = β, c = γ?
