Batman's origin story is first established in Detective Comics #33 (November 1939) later reproduced in the comic book Batman #1 (Spring 1940), but the mugger is not given a name until Batman #47 (June-July 1948). In issue, Batman discovers that Joe Chill, the small-time crime boss he is investigating, is none other than the man who killed his parents. Batman confronts him with the knowledge that Chill killed Thomas and Martha Wayne. Chill, believing there is no way Batman could know this, accuses him of bluffing, but Batman reveals his secret identity as Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the murder firsthand. Chill flees and seeks protection from his henchmen, but once they learn that Chill's actions led to Batman's existence, they turn on their boss and gun him down before realizing how priceless his knowledge of Batman's true identity is.Before dying Chill has a chance to reveal Batman's identity, Batman catches up and renders the goons unconscious. Chill dies addressing Batman as Bruce, and the two make a kind of peace with one another.

In Detective Comics #235 (1956), Batman learns that Chill is not a mere robber, but actually a hitman who has murdered the Waynes on contract with a Mafia boss named Lew Moxon.

  • I've allways seen Batman the brave and the bold as an Adam West like cartoon, a little more childish than Batman TAS, but THIS scene?! Damn, this was serious shit!

  • @ginnoveffect Yes. The "good angel" voiced by Kevin Conroy is named the Phantom Stranger, a hero from DC Comics decades ago who, if I'm correct, represents justice.

The bad guy is the Spectre, a spirit of vengeance, voiced by Mark Hamill.

  • I've read that the Spectre will appear in Young Jusice.

  • @Montesama314 Ironic that Mark Hamill voiced Spectre, considering the words "fulfill your destiny." :|

  • Jesus, I need to watch this episode.

But yeah, Batman, don't kill Joe Chill. That's straight up revenge. Just throw him in jail and let Atrocitus have his way with him. Now there's your god damn hand of vengeance.

  • @awesomeguy411 Yep, that's Hamill. The Conroy-Hamill duo is always something special.

  • @Montesama314 dude seriously? mark hamill kicks ass at voicing villains

  • Theres alot more dark episodes than people gave this show credit for: there was Bawana Beasts sacrifice, an elseworlds story of how batman will die with catwoman at the hands of the second joker, the "Killed off screen but you know theyre dead" killings of Lord Dead Man, Pied Piper, and of course Joe Chill at the end of this episode

  • @AmericanNohbuddy

    Oh

    Dear

    GAWD!

  • In the comics, Batman also found Joe Chill, but he was killed by The Reaper before Batman could do anything.

  • @skullythebloger

    Worse, The Spectre.
