Impressive, what an artist! What expression in the eyes! It is regretable that the long Russian tradition of great basses is extinct.

But the end of the scene is genial: Feodor confused and the crown of Monomah, now really no-one's, on the floor. Very impressive symbol of the beginning of 'Smutnoe vremya'.

This must be the only recording where the son is played by a male!!!

this is remarkable! chills down my spine!
its funny, but I read pirogov's bio and it turns out that there were 5 pirogov brothers and all of them were absolutely unique basses! and as the brothers agree, alexander was NOT the greatest one))
i just wonder how others have sounded!))

Pirogov is remarkable here; the emotion in his acting and in his voice is deeply moving, particularly in Boris' prayer. No Boris ever seemed to love his Feodor more (extra style points for Feodor being the right age, about 16), and few died more convincingly.
If only Pirogov did not have to struggle so much to make those high notes . . . nearly all of them are sharp. On the other hand, his low notes are just gorgeous.

Pirogov is great, too. Still, no harm in checking out other greats.
The scene is immensively impressive.

The acting is soooo natural. How the Tsar looks to the Tsarevich. It is touching.
