Mega Man X: Command Mission is mostly a traditional RPG within the MMX universe, and currently the only "X" game to be an RPG. We have both the PS2 and GameCube versions. The PS2 has novelty easter eggs while the GameCube version allows linking to the GBA to find hidden items and can use special tokens on a vending machine.

However, the GameCube game also has a higher framerate, slightly better visuals, lower load times, and a higher enemy encounter rate. On top of that, you get penalized much faster in the GC game if battles take too long, as turns and time seem to have been adjusted, making the game a little more challenging. The general consensus is that the game is good, but could be better. I thought the game was okay when I originally played it on the PS2, but think a little higher of it after playing the GameCube version.

In the year 22XX, a new, powerful substance known as Force Metal has been discovered. It can bestow Reploids with great powers and can be used in other ways to aid civilization for humans and robots. An island city (Giga City) was constructed in the middle of the ocean with the sole purpose of mining and melting Force Metal, and everything is going well until a group of Reploids waged a rebellion against the island.

The leader of the rebellion, known as Epsilon, was branded as a Maverick by the government and sends a team of Maverick Hunters (X, Zero, and someone familiar with the island called Shadow) to investigate their affairs and bring them to justice. This is the start of a somewhat deeper plot.

The game has many conventional RPG elements, but also has a few neat innovations. Combat is largely turn-based, but it also incorporates several things like multiple command inputs, analog rotation, and other facets to keep things interesting, at least for a while. The game is an interesting departure. While I would rather see a new Breath of Fire or Mega Man Legends, I wouldn't turn down the opportunity to play a new or refined follow-up to Command Mission.

This series of videos goes through the first Chapter. We've also been adjusting the quality and compression of our Dazzle videos. So far, the videos are a little clearer and a little smaller in size. Enjoy.

  • It looks like the GC version has the better graphics than the PS2, what do you think?
