Just a quick test to see how far I can get with a bone-only deformation setup for the mouth area.
The final rig will use a mix of this and shape keys.

  • This is part of the Durian project, right?

  • They don't use a human bone structure. They made a set of ovals and circles and wrapped a skin around those. Because they don't have to worry about stability and protecting the brain (3D models don't have brains), they can use a large number of small "bones" to try and imitate a real human head.

    you could try to set the mesh up the right way and hope you get some wrinkles.

    otherwise you can do some good stuff with weightpainting
