Thick snowfalls and blizzard drifts are what Vermont winter railroading is all about. Here, we capture several daylight mainline freights who are running late due to the storms, and also a "plow extra" light locomotive who runs 40 MPH to clear off at least a foot of concentrated snow to allow safer travel for Amtrak's Vermonter. The winter scene is nice, but to top it off are a great variety of locomotive models and paint schemes! Here, between MP 67 and 68 on the NECR Roxbury Sub, we catch these trains across these dates:

(Note: 323 is Northbound and 324 is Southbound, 323 is down grade and 324 is up hill)

323 - 2/5/11
FEC SD40-2 721
NECR SD40 5032 "Conrail"

324 - 2/13/11
CSOR D8E-39B 8530
CEFX SD40-2 3398
324 had trouble climbing up the hill due to problems with the 3398, as it was idling past the camera. You can see the conductor out on the catwalk. About half a mile after my position, I heard 3398 roar into Notch 8 (you can hear it in the distance if you listen carefully at 04:15). Once the locomotives got back to strength, the train picks up speed.

Next catch involves a nice Conrail pair on the front!

323 - 2/19/11
NECR SD40 6281 "Conrail"
NECR SD40 5032 "Conrail"
FEC SD40-2 722
NECR GP38 3850

Next catch in thick, wet inch-per-hour snow!

323 - 2/25/11
CEFX SD40-2 3715
FEC GP40-2 437
NECR GP38 3850

And last but not least...

"Plow Extra" - 3/7/11
RMPX GP40-2LW "CN"

Some videos were taken in town Northfield and others behind the Norwich University campus. Because I don't have a vehicle on campus, I am limited to what walking distance I feel like braving through the brutal elements.

  • Hey, I have a question. What kind of tripod do you use? The pan and zoom is like perfect! I am looking for a good tripod, that has a really smooth pan....thanks

  • @KyleVideoDesigns

    Velbon DV-7000.

  • Hands down the best American video I have seen in a year.

Great framing, great editing, timing, and fantastic zoom pan on the snow plow.

    This one goes to 11!

P.S. Which camera is this again?

  • Great video here, I've gotta make my way up there for a weekend one of these days and try out the Roxbury. I bet you're real happy to start feeling the forever chill of the white stuff up there now!

  • This is a very good video! well done!

  • Great horns, beautiful scenery, interesting and colorful road power, awesome video, you've got it all here.

  • Man, the NECR has a lot of former Conrail power in Conrail blue.

  • @milepost241 Unless you were in the eastern part of the state this year.

  • Dude EPIC Nathan M3 on the plow train

  • Good stuff and greetings from the Palmer sub

  • Don't know how I missed this one. Glad I saw it now, as usual nice job on the video!

  • Thanks for posting this! I spent many a summers and some falls along rt 12a mostly in Roxbury and Northfield, of course that was a long time ago. Have not been back since 2007. Thanks again fantastic work!

  • It seems like Northfield Mass sees a lot of action...do these trains operate up into vt through the bellows falls tunnel and into white river jct? I do alot of vtr but have no necrr in my collection and i would like to change that...if you knew the times and dates of these trains that would be awesome! I agree with blimpaccident video of the year awesome video
