Will Sterns is an award-winning photographer whose work runs the gamut from raw photojournalism to provocative fashion spreads to intimate celebrity portraits. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Rolling Stone, NME Magazine, and Teen Vogue. He has also worked with an impressive roster of clients including SonyBMG, Estee Lauder, and LOreal Paris on high-profile commercial projects.
After graduating from Art Center College of Design, Will went to work for legendary war photographer and mentor James Nachtwey, who is renowned for his courage and willingness to go anywhere to document the untold stories of war. His experience with Nachtwey solidified Wills passion for photojournalism, fully embracing the candor and sincerity afforded by the genre.
Wills fascination with the human experience has taken him all over the world, capturing a wide variety of subjects from gang members and war refugees to runway models and rock stars. Will finds it most satisfying to shoot people he already knows, using the pre-established intimacy and trust with his subjects as a catalyst for creativity and the opportunity to create something truly unique.
Recently, Will joined Strokes guitarist and friend, Albert Hammond Jr., in a lower east side recording studio, documenting Hammond and his band as they worked on his first solo album. Shot over the course of one year, the project yielded an outstanding assortment of candid photos, providing an inside look into the creative process of recording an album. Will relished the experience and was honored to work with a musician who understands the crucial role photography plays in cultivating and maintaining an image.
Will lives in New York City and is currently in the midst of several new projects. He just returned from Haiti where he spent a week documenting the aftermath of the earthquake. In addition to personal projects he is undertaking in Sudan and in the favelas (slums) of Rio, Will is completing work for his upcoming solo show in Frankfurt, Germany.
