  • Despite his vocal problems, Milnes was a fabulous actor, both physically and vocally

  • Niente, a confronto di Cappuccilli..........

  • ... listen to Cappuccilli...

  • The music here is just sublime, especially around 2:46- 2:50. I loved this clip, I wasn't familiar with this opera, but after watching this production, which I personally think is excellent, I was especially mesmerised by this and Orphanella in tetto umile. Tomowa-Wintow is excellent here, and while Milnes is not at his vocal best here(though he is not horrible either) he more than makes up for it with his musicianship and his acting.

  • Baritono del secolo!

  • @stevevandien With better technique, this would have been a major spinto or dramatic tenor. But VM's production was rather tight, even constricted. His voice held up for a decade or so at the Met, but faded shortly thereafter --

  • Milnes is not in his best voice here. His onset (what we used to call "attack") in particular seems rather tentative But that's not surprising to anyone who's read "American Aria." Having suffered hemorrhages in 1981 and also around this time, he's trying very hard to avoid a hard or even firm onset. I'm going out on a limb here. But maybe this explains Milnes' severe vocal decline in the 90s. Perhaps avoiding hard/even onsets also weakened his vocal cords. I dunno, just a thought:).

  • @babajaga39 Agreed on 2 points...Chernov is the best Boccanegra and most Baritones are a bit of a crap shoot. It must be "baritone-itis"
