"Washington, Race and Public Higher Education," a two-day conference at the University of the District of Columbia December 9th & 10th provides an opportunity to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the only public university in the nation's capital. It also announces the publication of a history book on the origins and evolution of UDC. "Since 1851: 160 Years of Scholarship and Achievement in the Nation's Capital" examines the history of Washington's "state" university. Written and produced by Drs. Marjorie Lightman and William Zeisel, the book features photos and the real story of Washington to trace the history of the university. The conference draws together scholars from within and outside the university, public policy specialists, and interested members of the community to wxame some of the themes developed in the book.
