"SNOW DRIFT" --VIDEO PAINTING
Last year I was working on a painting of the cargo ship "SNOW DRIFT" (oil on canvas, 48" x 72"). I thought I was mainly approaching it as a colorist, my main concern being yellow/purple seascape vs. ochre/carmine red/phthalo green highlights on the whiteness of the ship. It could've been an abstract composition, but it wasn't. As I was finishing I realized that the large presence of the ship was overwhelming all the other content of the painting. But, since my process involves making video paintings based on actual ones I decided to address that concern in video. As I was animating the painting I was varying degrees of Snow Drift presence. Composer Victoria Jordanova painted the Snow Drift seascape with music for a soundtrack. This is the final result, it's different than the painting in a lot of ways, but one thing is the same --it's not a formalistic coloristic composition.
This work is a part of "Fragments of Unused Time" series of video paintings. Initially inspired by Anima Mundi concept (a pure ethereal spirit diffused throughout all nature that animates all matter in the same sense in which the soul was thought to animate the human).
