"ball with surface", means a sanded or rough buff ball that grabs the lane sooner. This smooths out the reaction as the ball tends to hook earlier without the big late hook, allowing more control. Good advice on more difficult oil patterns. For me I used an aggressive ball w/ surface, then throw straight down 7/8 board, trying to stay behind ball and using good speed,w/ a strong follow through, get the ball through mid lane outside the track around 8 board at the break point, a good shot.

I have a tough time with this shot. The advice is good, Play outside at first and attack at different angles.
