Ares can use methane, which is basically "brewed" in mars using H2 and inhabitant CO2. You start this process using H2 brought from earth, but the chemical plant is designed to be self-sustained: H2O gathered from mars is decomposed into H2 and O2, such that the human can sustain life as well as to give oxygen for mathan propulsion to power rover and ares.
