The thunderbirds were in Sacramento the previous day and the pilot forgot to set his altimeter to the field elevation. He believed he was 1000 feet higher than he actually was.
Stunt planes of all sorts fly their tailfeathers off at airshows all over the world, and don't seem to crash as often as military jets. Okay, maybe that's just the impression you get from the news, but I'll tell you those guys aren't glued to their instruments. I'm just saying I would hope that jet drivers would ALSO get a little tingle when about to loop in 3/4 of the altitude required.
uh, no. you should not use your instincts to determine if you're high enough to do a stunt - that would cause crashes a lot more frequently than relying on the instruments.
Lesson was learnt by ALL Air Display Pilots .. Make sure you have the correct Airbase Altitude programmed into Your System, The Pilot had forgotten to re-calibrate to the new Elevation :-(

Red arrows all the way USAF Thunder birds suck. However the USAF has the best aircraft in the world.

Too much technology? All the aircraft I've flown had an altimeter.

Civilian Owned planes crash as often if not more than Military but the Military do get reported more since they're supposed to be top of the class.

Regretfully on Fast Jets you have to rely more on instruments as You're moving faster ... also the visability straight down isn't great!

What an example of relying too much on technology to do your work and not using your eyes and your instincts.
