Why don't we end Saturday mail? That might slow down the wasted cash flow enough for us to save the Postal Service, instead of turning it over to a private organization. I personally have no problem with turning it over to private hands, but we should at least try to fix the problem before doing so (i.e., only running the mail Monday-Friday). Ending Saturday mail would save the Post Office a good amount of cash.
An interesting question. Having lived in small mountain towns I know that they usually only deliver to a P.O. Box for USPS mail delivery. These buildings could still be "owned" or "run" by the USPS but opened to delivery from private entities in the case that basic delivery was opened up to private companies. I went to the UPS site and a package from small town Maine to small town Idaho was the same as NYC to SF. I think private would do better in the long run.
The "universal Service" factor must be considered when comparing the Postal Service to private-sector delivery. What private business would charge the same fee for delivering between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue in New York as they would charge for delivery between some remote small town in Maine and a farm in northern Idaho?
The Post Office is the best example as to why the government should not run much of anything! They aren't bad or stupid... but there is no one responsible for a "bottom line".
GOP wants to REGULATE unions, the hypocrites. They only want to regulate the little guy, not the fat cats. Screw you, plutocrats!

This has been said over and over but with lunk-heads in charge (greedy at that) there seems to be little progress.
