Pilgrim's Chorus (after Wagner's opera 'Tannhauser') played by Donald Lambert.
Recorded in 1941.
Donald Lambert (1904 - 1962) was a genius of harlem stride piano with a redoutable left hand. He also was a great musician and liked to play classical tune in his own style.

  • Oh, that heals. EXACTLY what is missing @ Wagner.

  • Oh, my God...

  • You know why we don't have more from this great man? Because Donald Lambert didn't know what he was worth. We will probably never know why he skulked away from New York to waste his talents playing in dives, to people with little comprehension of the profound difficulty of what he was doing.

  • YES !!!!!!!

  • Send me a message on Youtube so I don't forget - I will try to keep you updated as to if/when these recordings become available.

  • I have several hours (about 15 CDs) of homemade recordings of Donald Lambert - I did not make them but a fellow in New Jersey did. The quality is highly variable, sometimes the tape recorder is doing well, other times the battery is low and there's lots of distortion - wow, flutter, etc. Sometimes, the piano is in tune, sometimes it isn't. Sometimes Lambert is solo, other times he's with a (usually bad) bar band. The fellow who sent me copies of these is trying to get them commercially issued.

  • Wish there were more recordings around of him but the 51 - 61 album is pure class, it oozes individuality and charisma.

  • donald was the bomb! look at his allbum recordings 51-61 or something. my favorites are hold your temper, people will say we are in love, and i know that you know. i like keep off the grass and you cant do what my last man did also
