Strong Quake Shakes China

We begin today's broadcast with breaking news out of china. A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck Sichuan Province today.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the main quake struck at a depth of 29 kilometers and was less than 100 kilometers from the provincial capital of Chengdu.

The main quake was followed by a series of smaller tremors.

The quake was felt across much of China and as far southwest as Bangkok where office buildings swayed for several minutes.

Hundreds of residents and office workers left the buildings as a precaution.

High-rise residential and office towers in the western suburbs of Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, also shook for several seconds.

Chengdu is home to 10 million people and is 2000 kilometers southwest of Beijing.
