@valarierenee except Gus isn't ceasing communication a "family" member who "refuses to get help", he's murdering them because they threaten him should they be arrested. This is a crime family, not a real family.

that scene at the end of your run was something I will never forget.

I think it's a sign of a great show when a fan can have a valid interpretation of a character that's different from the actor's own interpretation.

The thing is, when you take everything into account, Gus intended for Walt to die and be replaced by Gale from the moment he started buying from Walt. Walt made 99%, Gale made 95%, the whole reason Gus hired Walt was for that 4%. Because of his pride, he tried to learn his competition's formula instead of killing him outright. Walt was never in Gus's family, he was just a step in his plan to dominate the meth game, and that makes Gus ultimately the bad guy, Walt at least has good intentions.

@skat1140 oh sorry, which character did you play in BB again?

Also Gus has a track record of not wanting to use threats and intimidation to make people do as he wants. He'd rather have employees that want to work with him and want to do a good job.
You can look back the seasons at certain events and comments from Gus that support Espositio's claim that Gus cares a tremendous amount about family and protecting that family.

I think you have a very limited view of family and what family can mean to people and it's preventing you from grasping Esposito's meaning. The moment Victor made himself a liability in that way he compromised everyone so he had to be neutralized. There are plenty of families that have had to cut off family members because of drug abuse or mental illness because they are danger to the rest of the family and the refuse to get help.

Thats kind of weird Esposito talks about Gus's operation as a "family" more than a "business." I think it should be obvious that it's a business much more than a family, that he values the former more than the latter. his business _requires_ him to, on occasion, murder "family" members. wouldn't someone who valued family more get into a different business? Gus is a high-functioning sociopath. Family really doesnt mean much to him at this point. All he cares about is power, and keeping it.
great AMA!
