I use Folk Art Textile Medium to prevent paint from bleeding under the stencil/painter's tape.

I monogrammed a cheap mirror at hobby lobby in a project like this when my aunt bought a new house. She loved it. Will have to try doing it on canvas next time.

I've used some of the vinyl shelf lining (got it at a yard sale) and that works great too!
