Why is he using xylophone mallets on a marimba??

This is common practice on the variety stage. Many artists (eg. The Holloways, Teddy Brown on occasion, et al) use marimbas chiefly as a xylphone. It allows you to do a xylophone act and have the added bonus and effect of being able to use marimba mallets and move down the instrument for a different colour. (Ctd in next message)

Sadly, the marimba does not make a particularly good instrument if one wishes to present an act with "pazazz". Providing one does not use very hard sticks nor try to play on the bottom octave or so, this poses no risk to the instrument. Gordon Cree's concert marimba as seen in this clip has been being used in this way since it was custom built for a stage act in 1937 and when I saw the bars the last time I worked with him, they still look like new. I hope this explains. AM
