These are some unedited clips of an underwater sequence for the short film "Grow". It was shot on the Samsung HMX20c using a cheap DiCAPac WP-D20 housing taped to the base plate of a tripod. The housing worked fine - it's not designed for use with a tripod and it's difficult to reach the buttons, and I had to cut a thick sponge to press against the back to keep it stable inside while leaving access to the power switch and record trigger. The touch screen worked through the housing though it was difficult at times to hit the correct buttons.

For lighting we used a 1000w quartz followspot rented from SLD lighting in manhattan. It needed to be quartz, because tungsten and other types of lights have a tendency to diffuse, especially in water, while quartz maintains its straight path.

  • How did they stay at the bottom of the pool? i always float up D:

  • @avatarmeeee You have to exhale so your lungs aren't buoying you up. It means short shots, but anything else will probably drown you.

  • How deep was the pool? looks to be about ten ft?

  • @bbman58 It was, yeah, we were looking at some pools in nyc that were a bit deeper but the cost was prohibitive to rent them, so we put an ad out on craigslist and found a nice family on craigslist with a big inground pool in their yard. :)
