  • no, he's just amazing at everything he does. he worked up his bass chops and won the audition fair and square.

  • That guy is so talented. He could probably win an audition on trumpet. I bet a lot of you didn't know that only 2 years ago, he didn't win the principal spot at Cleveland. So he just switched to bass and beat people like Denson Paul Pollard.

  • What piece is he playing?

  • @bhscat Jim plays bass trombone since he was in Juilliard( for fun), also he played bass trombone sometime with the NY phil while he was associate principal there. so he didn't switch to bass just for that audition. he just took his first bass tromobne audition.

for me, it is not about who beat who,I am sure that was really difficult to choose who get that job , both Jim and Paul are great player , they both can play tenor and bass trombone well ,also alto and contra bass trombone.

  • you can't really get much better than this!

  • Yeah, I love the lindberg valve but I don't like Conn horns at all, so unfortunately I can't have one, *HUFF*

  • i actually just got a Conn 88HCL and its amazingly quiet

  • Yeah, unlike a lot of rotors, you actually have to grease the ball bearings or it will be VERY "clanky". I ove the one I play on, but I take really good care of it. It also has the metal rotor parts replaced with a plastic airplane part, which makes it a lot quieter and smoother to use.

  • Its a Bach 42BO which is what i play on. Pretty decent horn but every one ive seen has a really loud trigger. Im getting a Conn 88H-CL to replace it soon. It plays a lot easier for me.

  • Then again, some people like lying about their age. ;) jk

  • No offense to anyone but the person who posted the video either got the age or the year wrong. He won the Pittsburgh Symphony job when he was 19 and started playing there when he was 20. He played there two years and then won the job in New York as Associate. He began playing there in 1997. This is his 12th season with NYP. Add the 2 years in Pittsburgh with the 12 in New york, you get 34 I asked him 2years ago what his age was, he said 33 :-)
