This just vividly illustrates how badly the Republican party has lost it's way. 1953: Ike 2009: Palin, Bush, Cheney, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Oreilly..... Sad.

Just found this after hearing Thom Hartmann refer to it on the radio. I knew about the farewell address, and this is just as powerful!

Sadly, Ike would be laughed out of today's Obstructionist, Teabagger party. He wouldn't even recognize them.

Look what Ike was warning about is very simple. Arms makers are dependent on selling Arms to the US Government. And when they do, they make profits. A good way to sell more arms is to have more wars. When wars become profit drivers, look for more and more wars to flare up. Ike saw this clearly. He fought the Pentagon on EVERY budget they sent.

LOL, I can't believe you used the word fact in your reply.

First of all, it was the Japanese that got us into World War 2. They declared war on us, and the Germans did the next day, so you can't pin that on FDR alone. The GOP opposed lend lease and they were opposed to the USN escorting convoys to Europe. The "New Deal" Look up the unemployment rate for 1930, and then 1932, then get back to me. Yeah, it went DOWN 10% in 2 years. The New Deal created the TVA for example.

You completely missed Eisenhower's point. Please listen again with a critical ear. He's not against the military, he's against one that has influence and control in the decisions of government. And he was, and still is, right.

    A) All those wars I mentioned were agreed to by Democrat presidents.

B)I'm saying we didn't get involved until FDR(democrat) wanted to. And btw that's the only thing that got us out of depression. The new deal was a crock that deepened the depression.

C)That's hearsay you guys always like to look at your horrid past where you are always on the wrong side of history and say the way you acted is how your opponents act today.

Fact is you were wrong then and continue to be wrong today.

It's been lost decades before Bush. Ever since Eisenhower went out of office it's been lost.

I think you missed Ike's point---a out of control military is a danger to a free world. That has been proved again and again most obviously. The current US military is the largest factory in the world. Its out of control.

that's horse manure. if the Dems started them, then the Rep.'s intensified them. And really, yours is a specious comment--it takes a congress---both Rep. and Dem. and the ruling Pres. to continue a war. No one is blameless.

You miss his point completely. He never said that all wars were unavoidable or unjustifiable. US action in WW II was justifiable. As he said in another speach "I don't think we should spend one penny more for defense than we have to." The US could slash it's military spending over & over and still be more than able to defend itself.
