Every year, 9 million people are estimated to be affected by tuberculosis.
One million of them are believed to be children under the age of fifteen. No fast, simple screening test for the disease exists. The most commonly used method of diagnosing tuberculosis is to examine sputum under a microscope. However, this test, developed in the 19th century, only identifies half of those infected. It is particularly inefficient for patients co-infected with AIDS or children.
