Watch an interview with S. Bruce Malkowicz, MD, the Co-director of Urologic Oncology at Penn Medicine.

"Well, the focus of my practice is urologic oncology. A lot of the people who I see come to me with fairly complicated issues or their diagnosis already. So we know that you have to give them a chance to really explain their part of the story, help them understand what they've gone through so far, and then start mapping out what we know about a particular disease, how it fits to their particular problem, and then the different options that we can use."

"I think the difference at Penn is that we integrate the disease between not only our surgical expertise, but that of medical oncology and radiation oncology. With a team approach, people are being educated."

"We're taking the time to inform them of all the different decisions that they can make, and because there are no right or wrong, or yes or no answers in many cases, they need to know what's going on and try to match what's available for what will be the best form of treatment for them."

"One area we've had a lot of experience is working with the creation of neo bladders. Meaning, when people need to have their bladder removed, that instead of needing an appliance on the outside, similar to a coloscopy, we can actually take larger segments of bowel and put these back, and rearrange them so that you have almost a new bladder that can be in the same place where the original bladder was, or have a very discrete little [stub], about the size of a pencil eraser head on that can be catheterized very discretely."

"The reason I do what I do here everyday is because I've got the opportunity, not only to practice medicine at a very high level with excellent co-workers, but also the chance to interface with people; looking at the areas in the clinical research, looking at areas in the laboratory, not only things that we do ourselves, but with other investigators who spend their time doing that full-time. And that allows us not only to provide the best care we can now, but really to look ahead to see what can we be doing better ten years down the road."

"I'm Dr. Bruce Malkowicz. I'm Co-director of Urologic Oncology at Penn Medicine."
