Fernando Botero, Artist in conversation with Robert Hass, Professor of English, UC Berkeley Poet Laureate of the United States (1995-1997).
Fernando Botero, the most famous living Latin American artist, will display his Abu Ghraib paintings at the University of California, Berkeley. These 47 paintings and drawings belong to a long tradition of artistic statements against war and violence that include Goya's Caprichos and Picasso's Guernica.
Organized by the Center for Latin American Studies, these paintings have never been displayed in a public institution in the United States. The exhibit was "proposed to many museums in the U.S," according to the artist, but all declined to show it.

As a Hispanic, I have to say we must get over the hatred we always display towards white Americans and the American culture. Case in point the the person at 51:40 who asks Botero the fist question.
Have some respect and rid yourself of the resentment towards USA. Instead let's embrace and respect each other.
During a recent trip to Medellin I got to visit Botero Square and the bronze sculptures were quite amazing. The city of Medellin overall is quite modern and exceptionally well-kept and clean. The people were kind, adorable and hospitable by nature.
Great point!!! No other artists have ever painted rubenesque figures. Another thing, if you find fat people ugly, keep it to yourself. How would you like it if I implied your people are all ugly?
Botero is not creative. He paints the known...and depicts the obvious. When Politics enter Art..creativity is gone... when creativity is gone....lectures are necessary...when lectures are necessary...only the mundane remains.
Why must America censer truths to its citizens ? The media also paints, what it perceives to be its own truths. We can record history not make it up as we go along.
