The first time I heard broadway star Brian 'Stokes' Mitchell perform this lullaby entitled "New Words", my soul was deeply touched. I was moved to tears, not only by Stokes passionate performance, but also by the message of the piece. This song reminds us that 'Life is There For Living, and Love is There For Giving'!
Words and music are by Tony-award winning composer Maury Yeston for his 1987 Broadway theater peice; 'In The Beginning'. The song has special meaning for Stokes, as his son Ellington was born during the holiday season, and started trying out his own "new words" the following Christmas. Stokes, and Mark Watters did the arrangement for this recording. It was performed last year in Salt Lake City, and is included on the 2009 Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert / PBS special, entitled "Ring Christmas Bells", (CD and DVD). http://tinyurl.com/yglnpln
This video is a work of love, I created it for two reasons. 1. as a tribute to Stokes, whom I deeply admire as a performer and as a person, and 2. As a holiday gift to all the families of the earth. I personally feel this song captures the very essense of Christmas. A Child. AFather, The Spirit of Wonder, and the Wonders of Creation - all wrapped up in one marvelous musical package for you to enjoy.
May God Bless you with peace this season, and may we each strive to keep the spirit of child-like Wonder, in our hearts all year!
_______________
Look up there, high above us,
In a sky of blackest silk.
See how round, like a cookie
See how white as white as milk.
Call it, "the moon" my son,
Say "MOON".
Sounds like your spoon, my son,
Can you say it?
New workd today!
Say "MOON"
Near the moon brightly turning,
See those shining sparks of light?
Each one new, each one burning
Through the darkness of the night.
We call them "stars", my son,
Say "STARS"!
That one is Mars, my son.
Can you say it?
New word today!
Say "Stars".
As they blink all around us,
Playing starry-eyed games,
Who would think it astounds us
Simply naming their names?
Turn your eyes from the skies now.
Turn around and look at me.
There's a light in my eyes now,
And a word for what you see.
We call it "Love", my son.
Say "LOVE".
So, hard to say, my son.
It get's harder.
New words today, we'll learn to say.
Learn "moon", learn "stars", learn "love".
La la la la ...
Learn "Moon", learn "stars", learn "happy"
Learn "peace", learn "love", learn "puppy"
Learn "friend", learn "toy", learn "sharing"
Learn "hope", learn "joy", learn "caring",
Learn "Life is there for living"
And "Love is there for giving"
Learn merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily
Live, and Laugh, and Dream.
Oh, thank you SO much for posting this song!! I have been looking/hoping for it for a year. Saw the concert last year--breath-taking. I would go see Brian Stokes Mitchell anywhere anytime just hoping he would perform this number again. Wonderful. Feel about this like I do Wilberg's "Come Thou Fount". Would follow the Tab almost anywhere if I knew they were performing that. Sweet video accompanying the music, too. Nice job! Again, thank you so much for posting.

This song is so beautyful, and you found the right words to honor it. And the video is perfect for this song, thank you, it calmed my heart tonight.
It is really one of the best songs, I know.
