KATIE MELUA A Moment Of Madness 01/04/2011 Cologne

It must have been a moment of madness, when I decided to go to a Katie Melua show. Thanks to Yoav, who had been sent on a Euro tour supporting, I had no choice, but attend this rescheduled sold-out gig.

Quite a sterile affair it was, despite the unusual on-stage filming going on. Katie herself didn't look too happy, and most likely because she was bored by her own self. Technically, one could not complain, but emotionally it all went down stone cold sober. I felt the urge to climb up, grab her, shake her and demand a makeshift cover of "Anarchy In the UK", conveniently renamed "Anarchy At The Lanxess Arena". That would have been fun to watch!

Disturbingly, the fans' response was positive throughout this textbook example of a daft show. It's either hormones or irreversable bad taste.

Katie, just forget about them and pick up your prescription for a complete A & R make-over. You need some edge, not this ballad poopoo.

To your defense, if you replaced your beautiful sad face by that of a self-conscious Georgian, this number would be a real killer. At least you still know how to look seductively into a camera... my camera! Ha ha!

I'd like to put emphasis on the fact that out of the songs I filmed that night, these two are the ones I considered good. I have two or three other videos that are pretty good but the songs are just awful.

I respectfully disagree. She is a great singer and songwriter and she puts her whole soul in a song. Now, speaking of Yoav, he is really annoying after two songs.

@dancelife170688 In a classically trained sense Katie certainly has the skills, but instead of catering "safe" songs to her audience she should get creative and do something unexpected. I bet she's dying to, but cannot due to commitments. As for Yoav, I agree his act is not made for large arenas. He appeared to be a bit restricted by intimidation... I’ve seen him in very small clubs where the awesomeness of his act becomes apparent. A one man juke box, pantomime and incredible lyricist.

I do agree, however, that with a voice like that she should dare experiment a little more!

@ndmushroom1 Exactly! Not just with a voice like that. She could be her own band. She could venture into new genres stretching her artistry a bit. Free herself of all expectations and do what she really wants. If you really enjoy what you're doing, you don't get exhausted by it and have to cancel tours. ;-)

@grint34 To me it is very apparent that Katie doesn't enjoy herself one bit. The saddest face in show business. Not surprising she had to cancel this leg of the tour before. I bet if she wasn't pushed into doing what she does by people around her, she would do something entirely different musically.

I have to say that it was not the best I have seen from Katie but I feel that Katie is trying to express herself to a point that she is not just a singer but maybe she wants to participate in a Broadway theater situation.

Recently seen her in BXL. Yoav is amazing ( he sounds like trance on an acoustic guitar), Katie... She's got a great voice, and she didn't seem bored to be there, and her songs were a lot more uplifting than her old ballads (btw I don't agree with your description of them as "poopoo"). The problem was, IMO, that both the organizers and the fans still perceived her as a vocal jazz artist: playing more uptempo songs to a crowd of fans with an average age of 40, all sitting down, kinda ruins it :)
