In many of my podcasts, I've used the Bridge City Toolworks KM-1 Kerfmaker to create exactly sized grooves and dados. It can be shrouded in mystery if you are just looking at the catalog. Come to think of it, it can be shrouded in mystery when you are reading the "user's manual".

In this video, I'll give you a tour of the KM-1, show how to effectively set the kerf using the actual cutters, and demonstrate its use on three random-thickness boards from the scrap bin. You'll learn how to use it in many situations on the tablesaw, router, mitersaw, bandsaw, and even the Bridge City JMP Jointmaker Pro.

Happily, the KM-1 is not a one-time product from Bridge City.

  • Great video. Is there a method you use to make or index to make grooves a set distance between them? For example I want to make a part that has 3 pieces 1 inch a part using either my festool router and MFT or my Bosch table saw. I like the little magnetic jig you created but unable to use with my aluminum Table saw top. On the festool router it only gives you a centerline to the router which then would have to be offset to determine start of groove. Is this the only way for the set up?

  • thank you for the great demonstration

  • Is that a Wood Whisperer push stick on your table saw @ 3:54?

  • Talk way too much. and camera should be in front of your work not on your back side.
