Meredith Danluck is a New York artist, director, and all-around amazing person who has a killer collection of power tools. VBS bumped into her a few months ago and discovered that she has been working on a film in West Virginia, a sort of impressionistic account of the current environmental catastrophe in the Appalachian Mountains. Mining companies are destroying entire mountains in order to get at the coal inside them. Quickly and efficiently, the oldest mountain range in the world is being systematically obliterated. We sent Meredith and VBS correspondent Derrick Beckles to the hills and hollers of West Virginia to show us what the end of the world looks like.

I myself am a coal miner from Logan County, WV and know the impacts of Surface "Strip" mining and see the effects of it everyday. The process has never been done correctly in any surrounding areas. Some places near my home have been "reclaimed" at least 20 years ago and still nothing grows there.

thankyou so much for the post, we need all the help we can get. We were here long before these coal mines, and furthermore, the miners they imported to work em. Aint many miners can say their family was here even before 1820. We been livin in these hills since 1630. Im tired of this jobs speech from the miners. How bout someone pays you 40 bucks an hour to stab your mom? Its a job right? We dont want these mines tearn up our place. If you do, then u dont belong here.

Oh yeah they also get paid holidays like three weeks of them, plus sick days, vacation pay, toped off with yearly BONUSES. I want their lifestyle mine freakin sucks!

Government get free food, free gas, free clothing, free vehicles free alot of other things with alot of money like 100.00-400.00 + an hour we the little people had these rich people taking this money from our back pockets, now after building million dollar a month sky scrapers, they build these huge airports, huge banks, and another money company called the IRS that taxes everything. Then start picking on us hard workers by handing out millions of DUI's then lowering their family insurance. SICK

They should dig up the Mountains in Virginia, plant huge coast guards , huge IRS, huge FBI buildings, all this crap in Virginia and Maryland theres no Ocean over here everyone is paying these monsters to take from us by raising the prices of everything as they monitor our every move and have us locked up for long periods of time it''s sick. Like Mike Tyson beating on a little baby it's sick. How many DUI's did these police earn these monsters this year
