My first test board using a PIC18F4550 microcontroller and an LCD module from Dick Smith (catalog number Z4172). The microcontroller contained a program which wrote the "Hello World!" string directly to the LCD module. One port (port D) was used for the data bus line and 3 bits of a second port (port B) were used for the signalling pins (data / instruction select, read / write select, and signal enable).
