The Poet's View offers unprecedented access into the life and work of some of America's finest poets. These films are warmly insightful portraits recorded in the personal setting of each poet's home and at various locations. The Poet's View offers an up-close invitation into the day-to-day life of the poet and an opportunity to hear poems read by the author.

The series was produced by the Academy of American Poets with generous assistance from the Wallace Stevens Fund. The director/producer was Mel Stuart, whose credits include the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and many critically acclaimed documentaries.

The full series is available on DVD, and includes portraits of John Ashberry, Louise Gluck, Anthony Hecht, Kay Ryan, and W. S. Merwin.

  • I need to read more about Ryan´s poetry. But Congratulations! This video shows me a great poet.

  • I read some of Ryan's poetry when it was announced that she was poet laureate---thinking how beautiful it was. Then I was going back through a notebook I keep and discovered that I clipped her poem out of The New Yorker years ago. She is a great poet, but she's also someone I would like to know. There aren't many artists like that. James Joyce to dinner, anyone? But a perfect dinner party would be Dorothy Parker, Kay Ryan, Voltaire and Bob Dylan.

  • It's not difficult to enjoy Kay Ryan poetry. It is also easy to admire her.
