You may wonder : why would Mac have so little virus ? and guess this is probably due to smaller market share than Windows....
The reason is actually the underlying UNIX FreeBSD system that MacOSX uses as a base and that simply makes it impossible to have virus on Mac. More on this in the history section of Wikipedia :

  • @daymith For an extensive list of virus reported objectively by US government, see here on their website : degue.st /Dgqs

You will see those are almost all Windows ones. The time it takes to prevent those virus exploiting the countless flaws of Windows and to clean up the mess afterwards cost a lot of time and money, hence really Windows PC are expensive.

  • @daymyth No, there is no virus. There are security holes, but that is different.

More expensive because of its TCO. You can look it up : Total Cost of Ownership. It just cost more money to maintain it, especially in corporate world.

The fact there are companies in the world making anti-virus software does not mean there are virus. It just mean they are exploiting the fear of virus from people. Nobody that I know ever had even 1 virus on a Mac. Not a single 1. And I include old people.

  • @jackdeguest If it's free how does it render it more expensive? And it's just 1 program... read it 1... And don't think there is not malware and spyware that infects mac there certainly is, infact Avast also make anti-virus software for OSX, because there actually is a demand for it. You're lulled into a false sense of security which just isn't true. Sure they're are very few viruses for OSX but there are certainly sufficiant malware to be concerned about.

  • @daymyth You have the reply in your own comment. In Mac you do not need any anti-virus and you can browse everywhere. A PC without all you describe catch a virus pretty quickly. This is just a fact. And it renders PC overall more expensive than a Mac.

  • @daymyth Very unlikely you can get one very the same level of spec and cheaper.

Apple is the most valuable company in the world by market capitalization after Exxon OIl company and makes more money than Microsoft, so really who cares about market share ?

  • @jackdeguest Wait what are you talking about. Wait how do you get viruses "just by connecting to the Internet", how does that even happen? If you surf all trusted and reliable sites it's VERY unlikely you will EVER get a virus. Also Avast, the leading virus software is free and works awesomely. I surf some pretty dodgy websites and it constantly blocks attacks post haste.

  • @jackdeguest Because I can get one with the same specs for $200 so why bother? "ensure a consistent customer experience" this way, sounds to me like they're to lazy to deal with things such as wide hardware support and possibly complicated customer service requirements. Well their marketing is certainly working in other sectors such as tablets and previously phones (android now dominates). Apple account for <7% of the PC market so... It's not obvious to me perhaps you can explain?

  • @daymyth WIndows gets virus just by connecting to Internet. Why would I want to buy Security software or service pack or whatever. People just want it to work period. No hassle, no right click property, bla bla bla.

This world is gone and the post PC has already started. Too buggy and inconsistent and unreliable.

  • @jackdeguest It's actually not buggy and Windows 7 looks really shiny (if you're into that, but I roll everything right back, don't need any of that superficial wankery). What exactly are you doing on your computer to get it "so full of viruses"? You do understand viruses don't just appear right? You allow them in there through your own incompetence or ignorance. How is it expensive to maintain? You buy the software once all future updates are free... even service packs...

  • @daymyth It is not that Apple cannot do the same, but rather do not want to do the same, essentially to ensure a consistent customer experience which is at the heart of the success of Apple. Obviously it is working for them.

Frankly, you can get a Apple Laptop with very high spec for less than $1,000 so why bother ?
