as a professional dog groomer myself, the myth that dogs feel better in the summer with a haircut isnt true. They sweat thru the paw pads, the hair actually acts as insulation to keep them cool, just like the insulation in your house. It keeps the cold air in. Trimming the hair is fine but you should shave them down to nothing. Just shaving the hair on the bottom of the feet between the paw pads is good because that's where they sweat from.

It isn't about "style" to keep their hair long. The fur actually insulates the skin, which keeps them cooler during the summer.
Also, they have a serious risk of sunburn if you cut their hair too short.
