Darryl Read's promo film - for his new single Money Number One ( A Song for Siam), Rocks out a raw 1st version. The promo was filmed in Thailand over 4 days, and uses real locations of clubs bars and street scenes (this is the first raw cut there will be an extended version).
Like many of Read's promo films - this one follows a story line, of a 70's style Super Pimp club owner/Singer. Read drew on influences like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver for a 70's sleazed-out feel, and himself portraits a made up character of his own, a concoction of John Travolta, Harvey Keitel and Elvis Presley.
The idea of the story line came to Read, when recording the song at the Barry Upton's studio; who also co-wrote and produced the song - which again has a sleazed-out 70's disco feel, including wah-wah guitar and cool harmonica playing. Upton and Read initially thought they were making a pop song, and quite rightly it is, only it came out heavier than expected word-wise and rings out an ambiguous message.
Is money bigger than God? To quote one lyric: 'darkness is my motivation and money is number one!' Should give you some idea of what your in for.
Filmed on three funky wild camera's, to give you a feel of being there, plus Read's performance of the song was spontaneously shot live at the Champagne club in Siam - to a large crowd. His back up dancer's are Go Go chicks. The piece is sprinkled suitably with cool cameos, of real club girls and, the clubs male staff who feature as actors.
In this instance of player's, Jason McDonald and Darryl Read - take tips off Fellini to produce and direct a little piece of poetic magic in motion pictures - that couldn't be more realistic - no matter how hard you tried!
