  • Buddhist bible is not dhamma pada, it is tripitaka.

  • @ruzickaw i cant believe buddhists would waste time debating such a meaningless topic. this would be the perfect place to ask THAT question,'what would Buddha do?' my guess, absolutely nothing. silence= response.

  • The Pali canon are the writings accepted by most Buddhist as the Buddha's teachings. We also have many other sutras accepted by other sects . The Dhammapada is more akin to the Psalms of the bible and do not contain enough information to be a full teaching of Buddhism. The Dhammapada is found within the Pali canon. I'm sure the monk knew this, but simplified his answer . I would have said the Pali canon are accepted as the teachings of the Buddha,

  • The Bible also contains various stories in it and various illustrations and teachings. But this monk never said the Dhammapada IS the Bible. He said it's like one.

  • I wonder if maybe he's simply trying to point people to *something*, a *single* book, and the Dhammapada is perhaps the closest thing to a widely accepted set of scriptures in Buddhism. It works reasonably well for a reference point. I've heard people say that the Bible begins with "in the beginning God..." whereas, *if* Buddhist scriptures had a beginning, it would be the first line of the Dhammapada, "Mind is the forerunner of all experience". Though that's not true of *all* forms of Buddhism.

  • excellent answer.

  • Most of the people calling in to this show have strictly Christian backgrounds. I don't think the Rev. was saying that the Dhammpada is the SAME as the Bible or should be used in the same way, I believe he was merely trying explain the Buddhists have books and scriptures they use for guidance, much like Christians.

  • how can you say the Dhammpada is like the Bible and it contains stories? There is not one story in it, only short aphorisms.

Buddhist scriptures are more voluminous than the the Bible. Which one would you use as a Bible?
