@ShowYourWorking Absolutely. The phrase is mainly a moral compass... nobody is gonna wait for someone to hit them. Though the direct counter is the highest level of karate technique.

depends on how you look at it. technically i believe your fist should land just ahead of your foot because once your foot hits the ground (depending on what you're doing of course)...your body stops moving.

That's not true. The foot should contact the ground the same time the hand contacts the target. This will allow for complete inertial transfer.
