here is my recitation of this famous poem..
O Captain ! My Captain - Walt Whitman
O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring: But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head; It is some dream that on the deck, You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won; Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells! But I, with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.

  • i have to memorize this for my project it stinks to me but cool

  • understandable, since Walt Whitman himself did not like this poem much .. all the best with your project ! :-)

  • Unfortunately my performance 19 years ago was not recorded. I think I would have enjoyed your rendition, but with the enormous speakers I use, it sounded like you were speaking into a can, I was hoping to enjoy the fluctuations in your voice. You're one of the best sounding voices that I've been able to find, it was just so muffled. I'll do a recording as soon as I'm able.

  • do let me know when you upload, i would be very glad to hear a version from someone who has touched the heights !

  • I might have enjoyed it, but the recording is terrible, distorted. I read this at State competition with one of my own and "Please hear what I am not saying" and I won 1st place and my varsity letter. Maybe you should try recording it again with a better mic.

  • btw.. i couldn't locate your prize winning rendition on your site ... i'd very much like to see it and would be glad if you could give me the link to it ..thanks !
