Mobile phone service provider, Safaricom has launched the first ever-solar powered mobile phone. The phone, retailing at 3000 shillings, has the back case modified to accommodate a miniature solar panel for charging. Safaricom Chief Executive, Michael Joseph says 60 minutes of charging will see the phone run for 24 hours. The phone, which is manufactured in partnership with ZTE of China, comes with a conventional charger and is expected to drive subscriber numbers in rural areas, off the electricity grid. The launch comes amidst great emphasis on green energy solutions to power the economy, as the country grapples with an energy crisis that has resulted in power rationing.

  • ahh,,was in kenya in november and bought maself one indeed from safaricom,,i thot its already launched,,they already sold so many,,kudos for going green,,tyhe world needs that.

  • Good move vodafone..but when are you going to launch it in the "first world" ?

  • Michuki is the only minister who always sees ahead. If only he was incharge of energy ministry i bet he would have found a way out of the power rationing. Kiraitu is a Havard educated fool who is of no use to Kenyans.

  • Michuki is a man of his word;I would hate him as a kaleo but he created the seat belt policy and it worked well;he helped Kibaki into presidency and it sailed thru; and now he is going green and it will for sure be great.I have no reason to think you are wrong in any way.

  • Now the watchman has an extra duty to watch your phone charge outside beside your car..

  • we just need to identify our resources and put them into good use, both human and natural

  • Watch out, Africa is on the verge or its technological boom. We just need leadership.the down is nearing.

  • He might be considerd tough and I mean tough , but I like this Michuki guy as well Mr. Kulundu who take the bull by it's horn meaning US policy to third world. I wan't michuki back to minisrtry of transportation. KPLC nyinyi ni bure,

  • haha....clever move, extremely well timed. And at a good price too.

  • good move......KPLC mko wapi...
